The Characters of Native Love Jams

Winnow

As an Anishinaabe forager and cook, it’s the wild places with the tasty nibbles and the soothing effect of the natural world where Winnow feels most at home.

Winnow’s character development revolves around navigating a period of significant change in her life. She has recently left her fiancé, Chris, due to his jealousy and destructive nature, and his infidelity with a co-worker. Seeking a fresh start, Winnow accepts a position to forage and cook at the inaugural Indigenous Food Days Celebration in Rainy Bay. Winnow’s arc in Native Love Jams delves into themes of self-discovery and finding genuine connection after experiencing past hurt.

Winnow was also the main character in the fictionalized retelling of the author’s own coming-of-age tale in Girl Unreserved. Winnow represents the author’s personal struggle to understand healthy love and happy endings.
